This essay, published in The Nation more than two years ago (April 3/10, 2023), exposes a quid pro quo deal that traded Israeli assistance in the 2016 Trump campaign for unprecedented US support in recognizing Jerusalum - instead of Tel Aviv - as the Israeli capitol. The deal also included the end of US support for the JCPOA nuclear agreement with Iran and it allowed for the continuing occupation of Gaza at a time when public pressure to find a long term solution to the occupation of Gaza was growing significantly. According to Bamford, it is likely that the Russians hoped Trump would rescind Obama era sanctions for aiding in the defenestration of the Clinton campaign but it was the Israelis who capitalized on the hack of the DNC email server and helped Trump win the 2016 election. In the end it appears that Russian collusion proved to be an effective smoke screen for a campaign that was secretly orchestrated by the Israelis and the future president of the United States.
