For Israel, this is a "buffer zone" but one they can't wait to occupy and control with their military. That was also their aim in Gaza -- to make it uninhabitable and desolate and hope that 2 million Palestinians somehow will leave and find homes elsewhere -- a stupid notion.
Thank God that Turkey has stepped up as an ally for Syria. It's hard to imagine how the entire region can recover from the devastation of airstrikes. One can only hope that part of the U.S. - Russia meetings on Ukraine will also cover -- and come to some agreement -- about helping the Palestinians, Syrians, Lebanese, and keep Israel in check.
